Terms
Last updated 20 September 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Alexander Ess, a sole trader in the United Kingdom who runs Motive ("we", "us"). They cover the Motive app and this website, including signing up for an event here as a guest. By using Motive, you agree to them. Our privacy policy explains how we use your data.
Who can use Motive
- You must be 16 or over.
- To use the app, you need an email address at a uni where Motive is available. One account per person, and only you use it.
- Keep your email account secure, because that's how you sign in.
No tolerance for abuse or objectionable content
We have zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users. You must not post, upload or send anything, or behave in any way, that:
- harasses, bullies, threatens or intimidates anyone
- is hateful or discriminatory, including on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation or disability
- is sexually explicit, violent or graphic
- is illegal, or encourages or helps anyone break the law
- impersonates someone, or misrepresents who you are or which society you speak for
- is spam, a scam, or a fake or misleading event
- shares someone else's personal data without their permission
- infringes someone else's rights, such as using a photo you don't have permission to use
You also must not try to get around blocks, access data you're not meant to, overload or disrupt the service, or collect data from it with bots or scrapers.
If you break these rules, we remove the content and may remove your account straight away, without warning. A removed account's email can't be used to sign up again.
Reporting and blocking
- You can report a member from their profile, and an event or a society from its page.
- Reporting a member also blocks them. You can block anyone, and you'll stop seeing each other.
- We review every report within 24 hours. We remove content that breaks these terms and the accounts that posted it.
- You can also email hello@getmotive.uk. If you think someone is in danger, contact the emergency services first.
Societies, admins and events
- Only register a society, or act as its admin, if you're on its committee or it has authorised you. We may check, and we may refuse or remove a society.
- Events are run by the societies that post them, not by us. The society is responsible for its event, including its details, the venue and keeping people safe. We aren't responsible for events or for what happens at them.
- If you export an event's list, use it only to run that event. Keep it secure, don't share it, and delete it when you no longer need it. The exported copy is your society's responsibility under data protection law.
Guests
If you sign up for an event on its web page, these terms apply to you too. The society running the event sees your details. You can drop out from the same page.
Your content
You keep ownership of what you post, such as your profile photo, event descriptions and covers. You give us permission to store it and show it to other people on Motive, as far as we need to run the service. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account. You're responsible for having the right to post it.
Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time from the You tab. We can suspend or remove your account if you break these terms, or if we have to for legal reasons.
The service
Motive is free. We'll try to keep it running, but we don't promise it will always be available or free of errors, and we may change or stop parts of it. We're not liable for losses that come from using Motive, except where the law doesn't allow us to limit our liability, such as for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud. Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer.
If you got Motive from the App Store
Apple's standard licence agreement for apps also applies to your use of the app. Apple isn't responsible for Motive or its content, and has no obligation to provide support for it.
Changes and the law
If we change these terms, we'll update the date at the top, and we'll tell you in the app if the change is significant. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you can also bring a claim in your local courts.
